Pricing & how RentLocal compares
RentLocal is a peer-to-peer marketplace - local owners set their own daily rates and compete for bookings. Because there is no agency middleman, prices are market-driven and often more affordable than traditional rental companies, but we do not guarantee the lowest price. You can compare cars side by side on the browse page and choose the price that fits your trip.
Every car on RentLocal is owned by a real person in the Faroe Islands. Owners list their car, set their own price and availability, and you book directly. ePay/Nets handles payment in DKK, our team verifies every renter's licence, and we step in if anything goes wrong. Pickup is coordinated directly with the owner.
Getting started
You must be at least 21 years old and have held a valid driver's license for at least three years. Some owners set a higher minimum age - that will be shown on the listing.
Yes. Before your first booking request, you upload your driver's license and date of birth. Our team reviews it manually - usually within 24 hours. You only need to do this once.
Each owner sets their own pickup location and instructions, shown on the listing. Most pickups happen in the owner's town - common locations are Tórshavn, Vágar (near the airport), Klaksvík, and Runavík.
Booking & payment
Pick your dates on a listing, choose your protection (Standard, or Reduced excess if the owner offers it), and pay. Your card is authorised but not yet charged. The owner has 24 hours to approve or decline. If they approve, your card is charged and the booking is confirmed. If they decline or don't respond in time, the hold is released automatically and you're not charged anything.
All payments are handled by ePay/Nets in DKK. You can pay with card and other supported methods. Your card is authorised when you submit the booking request and only captured once the owner approves.
Yes. You can send a pre-booking inquiry from any listing without committing - handy if you want to ask about pickup or extras first. Once you've sent a booking request, all messaging happens inside the booking conversation.
Yes, with conditions. If the owner hasn't approved yet, you can cancel for free - the card hold is released. Once the booking is confirmed, you get a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before pickup, or a 50% refund within 48 hours. Once the rental has started, cancellations are no longer self-service - contact us if something has gone wrong.
Protection & damage deposit
Every booking includes a 150 DKK per-day insurance fee and a 5,000 DKK refundable deposit reserved as a hold on your card up to 7 days before pickup (must succeed by 48 hours before pickup) - it's not charged, just authorized. With Standard terms your maximum liability for damage is 4,000 DKK. If the owner offers it, you can buy the Reduced excess option for 149 DKK per rental day, which lowers your maximum liability to 2,000 DKK and uses a smaller 3,000 DKK deposit. In both cases 1,000 DKK of the deposit is reserved for documented tunnel fees, missing fuel, extraordinary cleaning and smoke odour - not damage. After the trip, the unused portion of the deposit hold is released automatically once the 72-hour owner reporting window closes - no money is taken unless deductions apply.
The damage deposit is a refundable authorization hold of 5 000 DKK placed on your card up to 7 days before pickup - it reserves the funds but does not charge them. After the trip we release the unused portion of the hold: any documented tunnel fees, missing fuel, extraordinary cleaning or smoke-odour fees are captured first, then if no damage is reported the rest of the hold is released automatically - no money was ever taken. If the owner reports damage, you are liable for at most 4,000 DKK (captured and paid to the owner toward their deductible) and the rest of the hold is released - and you have 48 hours to dispute the report from the booking page.
We automatically release the unused portion of the deposit hold shortly after the 72-hour owner reporting window closes (minus any documented tunnel fees, missing fuel, cleaning, or smoke-odour deductions that are captured). Since it was only a hold, nothing was charged, so nothing needs to arrive - the pending hold simply disappears from your statement. If a damage report is filed, the deposit is settled and the remaining hold released once the case is closed.
We start trying to place the hold 7 days before pickup and retry every couple of hours, notifying you each time. If the hold still hasn't gone through 48 hours before pickup, the booking is automatically cancelled and the rental fee refunded in full. Make sure the card has at least the deposit amount available in good time before pickup.
If damage occurs, the owner reports it to their own insurer within 72 hours after the trip ends and files a damage report on the booking with photos. You are liable for at most 4,000 DKK (or 2,000 DKK with Reduced excess), which is captured from your deposit hold and paid to the owner toward their deductible; the rest of the hold is released back to you. Repair costs above your cap are covered by the owner's insurance and the owner. You have 48 hours to dispute the report from the booking page, and our team reviews every dispute.
Tunnel fees, fuel & cleaning
No. All Faroese tunnels (Vágatunnilin, Norðoyatunnilin, Eysturoyartunnilin, Sandoyartunnilin) are post-pay. After your trip the owner submits the documented crossings within 72 hours and we deduct the toll plus a per-tunnel service fee from your refundable deposit. If the deductions exceed your deposit, the residual is charged to your saved card off-session. You'll receive a notification when deductions are applied.
Yes. Return the car with the same fuel level as at pick-up. If the owner reports a fuel deficit at check-out, the missing fuel cost is deducted from your refundable deposit.
At drop-off the host can report extraordinary cleaning (750 DKK) and/or smoke odour (1,500 DKK) when the car is returned beyond normal wear. The amount is taken from your deposit together with any tunnel and fuel charges and paid to the owner. If the total deductions exceed your deposit, we charge the rest to your saved card. You always receive a notification with photos and notes from the host, and you can contact support if you disagree with a deduction.
Roadside assistance is included with every rental at no extra charge. If you have a breakdown, a flat tyre, or get locked out, contact us through the booking page and we'll coordinate help.
Pickup, drop-off & reviews
We ask both the renter and the owner to take a few photos of the car at pickup (front, rear, left, right) and again at drop-off. It takes a minute and protects everyone if anything is questioned later. You'll see a guided flow on the booking page when it's time.
After your trip is complete, both you and the owner have 14 days to leave a review. Reviews are blind - neither side can read the other's review until both are submitted or the deadline passes. This keeps reviews honest.
For owners
Before your listing goes live, you add your bank account details to your payout profile. Our team manually verifies these details (usually within 1-2 business days) before your first payout - you can already list your car and take bookings while verification is in progress. Once verified, your earnings are released to your bank 72 hours after each trip is complete and free of disputes or open damage reports.
We need the legal account holder name (matching your platform identity), and either an IBAN or a Faroese/Danish registration + account number. You'll also confirm that the account belongs to you before submitting. We never ask for your online banking password or PIN, and your bank details are never shared with renters.
Yes. RentLocal pays your earnings out gross - you're responsible for reporting rental income to TAKS (or your local tax authority) and paying any tax owed. We don't withhold or file taxes on your behalf.
Yes. Every active listing must have a valid Tunnil.fo payment arrangement (single payment, automatic, or subscription). Renters cross under your account during the trip, and you submit the crossings to RentLocal within 72 hours after the trip ends. We charge the renter and transfer the full toll amount to you.
