Rental terms

These rental terms apply to all bookings made through RentLocal. By confirming a booking, you accept these terms. RentLocal is a peer-to-peer marketplace - we do not own the vehicles and are not a car rental company. The rental agreement is between you and the vehicle owner.

1. Booking and payment

When you send a booking request, your card is authorised for the full amount through ePay - but not charged. The owner has 24 hours to approve or decline. If approved, the payment is captured and the booking is confirmed. If the owner declines or does not respond, the authorisation is released and no charge is taken. All prices are in DKK. A service fee is shown as part of the booking flow before you pay.

2. Requirements

You must be at least 21 years old and have held a valid driver's licence for at least three years. Some owners may require a higher minimum age. You must complete renter verification before sending a booking request.

3. Pick-up, drop-off, and vehicle rules

The rental starts and ends at the agreed pick-up and drop-off times. Both you and the owner must document the car's condition with photos at pick-up and drop-off - these may be used in the event of damage or disputes. No refund is given for unused rental time if the car is picked up late or returned early.

Smoking is not allowed in any RentLocal vehicle. Smoke odour at drop-off will result in a 1,500 DKK fee. The car must be returned in acceptable condition and with the same fuel level as at pick-up. Extraordinary cleaning may result in a 750 DKK fee. Parking and traffic fines during the rental are your responsibility.

4. Insurance fee, deposit and protection

Every booking includes a mandatory insurance fee of 150 DKK per rental day, added on top of the rental price (100 DKK of this is paid to the owner). A refundable deposit is reserved as an authorization hold on your card up to 7 days before pick-up - this is not a charge, it simply reserves the funds. The hold must succeed between 7 days and 48 hours before pick-up - otherwise the booking is cancelled automatically and the rental fee is refunded in full.

  • Standard: a refundable deposit hold of 5,000 DKK. If the car is damaged, you are liable for at most 4,000 DKK, which is captured from the hold and paid to the owner toward their insurance deductible. Repair costs above 4,000 DKK are covered by the owner's insurance and the owner. The remaining 1,000 DKK of the deposit is not for damage - it is reserved only for documented tunnel fees, missing fuel, extraordinary cleaning (750 DKK), or smoke odour (1,500 DKK).
  • Reduced excess (optional, if the owner offers it): for an extra 149 DKK per rental day, your maximum liability for damage drops to 2,000 DKK and a smaller refundable deposit hold of 3,000 DKK applies. As with Standard, the last 1,000 DKK of the deposit is reserved only for tunnel fees, fuel, cleaning and smoke odour - not damage.

Damage deductible coverage only applies if the damage is covered by the owner's vehicle insurance. If combined deductions exceed the deposit, the remaining amount may be charged to your saved card. The unused portion of the deposit hold is released after the trip once any post-trip deductions are settled - since it was only a hold, no money was taken and nothing needs to arrive on your card.

5. Tunnel fees

Tunnel crossings in the Faroe Islands are post-paid and registered through the owner's Tunnil.fo account. The owner has 72 hours after the rental ends to submit documented crossings. RentLocal verifies the claim and captures the tolls plus a service fee from your deposit hold. You may dispute tunnel fees within 48 hours of being charged, from the booking page.

6. Cancellations

Before owner approval: free cancellation - no payment taken. After approval: full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before pick-up; 50% refund if less than 48 hours before pick-up. Cancellation is not available after the rental has started. If the owner cancels, you receive a full refund.

7. Damage and disputes

If damage occurs, the owner must report it to their own vehicle insurer within 72 hours of the rental end, obtain a binding repair estimate, and submit a damage report with photos on the booking. You are liable for at most 4,000 DKK (or 2,000 DKK with Reduced excess), which is captured from your deposit hold and paid to the owner toward their deductible; the rest of the hold is released back to you. Repair costs above your cap and up to the owner's own deductible are the owner's responsibility. You have 48 hours to dispute a damage report from the booking page, and our team reviews every dispute.

8. Owner insurance requirements

Vehicles rented through RentLocal must carry both statutory liability insurance (covering damage the vehicle causes to people and property other than the vehicle itself) and comprehensive (kasko) insurance covering damage to the vehicle itself. The liability excess must be 0 DKK; the owner sets their own comprehensive excess. We recommend Betri Trygging's "Einastandandi" or Trygd's "Skrokktrygging", extended with "Bilhjálp" (roadside assistance in the Faroe Islands). Owners must confirm with their insurer that the policy also covers rental use, and register the vehicle as a rental car with Akstovan. If a damage is not covered by the owner's insurance, no deductible coverage is provided through the deposit.

9. Owner payouts

Owners must submit bank account details (IBAN or Faroese/Danish registration + account number) and confirm they are the legal holder of that account before receiving payouts. RentLocal manually verifies these details before any payout is made; unverified or rejected accounts cannot receive funds, and rental earnings remain safely on the owner's RentLocal balance until verification is complete. Verified earnings are released 72 hours after each trip completes, free of disputes or open damage reports. Owners are solely responsible for reporting rental income to TAKS (or their local tax authority) and paying any tax owed - RentLocal does not withhold or file taxes on an owner's behalf. Providing false or fraudulent payout details is a breach of these terms and may result in account suspension.

10. Roadside assistance

24/7 roadside assistance is included with every rental at no extra cost.

11. Limitation of liability

RentLocal provides the platform "as is". We are not liable for disputes between renters and owners except as required by applicable law. The rental relationship is between you and the owner.

Privacy policy

What we collect

We collect information you provide when you register (name, email), when you complete renter verification (date of birth and driver's licence), when you send messages, and when you make bookings (dates, pricing, payment metadata, pick-up and drop-off photos, damage and tunnel-fee evidence). Payment card details are handled by ePay/Nets and never stored on our servers. We also collect standard technical data (IP address, browser, timestamps) for security and operations.

How we use it

We use your data to run the platform: authentication, verification, bookings, payments, notifications, trust and safety, and customer support. We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

Third-party services

We use ePay/Nets for payments, Supabase (EU region) for authentication and storage, Resend for email, Sentry (EU region) for error monitoring, and Vercel to host the application. Each provider processes data under its own privacy policy.

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by contacting us at support@rentlocal.fo. We use cookies only for authentication and session management - no advertising or tracking cookies.
